What the water pump does
The water pump circulates coolant between the engine and the radiator. Without it, heat builds up in the engine within minutes. Most pumps are driven by the serpentine belt or the timing belt; some newer engines use an electric pump.
Signs of a failing water pump
- Coolant leaking from the front of the engine, often from a small weep hole on the pump.
- A whining or grinding noise from the pump bearing.
- The temperature gauge climbing or the engine overheating.
- Steam from under the hood.
- A wobbly pump pulley.
Why the cost varies between engines
Where the pump sits makes all the difference. On engines where it is driven by the accessory belt and bolted to the front of the engine, the job is straightforward. On engines where it is driven by the timing belt, the timing belt has to come off first, which adds a lot of labor. On some engines the pump is buried behind other components or inside the timing cover, which raises the cost again.
Pair it with the timing belt when you can
If your water pump is driven by the timing belt, the two should usually be replaced together. The labor to reach them overlaps almost completely. Replacing a timing belt and leaving an old pump behind risks a leak that means paying the same labor again soon after.
Don't keep driving an overheating engine
A failing water pump can turn into a much bigger repair if the engine overheats. Overheating can warp the cylinder head and blow the head gasket, which costs several times more than a water pump. If the temperature gauge rises into the red, pull over and turn the engine off.
What else is usually replaced
- Coolant, which is drained during the job.
- The pump gasket or O-ring.
- Sometimes the thermostat, hoses or drive belt if they are old.
Can you do it yourself?
On engines where the pump is easy to reach, this is a manageable job for an experienced home mechanic who can bleed air from the cooling system afterward. If the pump is behind the timing belt, a shop is usually the safer choice.
Questions to ask the shop
- Is my water pump driven by the timing belt?
- Does the quote include coolant, a new thermostat or hoses?
- Are you using an original-equipment pump?
- What warranty covers parts and labor?
How the job is done
- The cooling system is drained once the engine is cool.
- Parts blocking the pump are removed. If the pump is belt-driven, the serpentine belt comes off; if it is timing-belt-driven, the timing belt is removed.
- The pump bolts are removed and the old pump comes out. The mounting surface is cleaned.
- The new pump is installed with a new gasket or O-ring and tightened in sequence.
- Belts and other parts are reinstalled, the system is refilled with the correct coolant, and air is bled out.
- The engine is run to operating temperature and checked for leaks and correct temperature.
Frequently asked questions
Can a water pump leak only a little? Yes. Many start with a slow weep. It is still a sign the internal seal is failing.
How long can I drive with a failing water pump? It depends on how fast it is leaking, but if it fails completely the engine can overheat quickly. Don't plan long trips until it is replaced.
Does coolant type matter? Yes. Use the coolant specified by the manufacturer; mixing types can cause deposits and corrosion.
Is an electric water pump different? Some newer engines use an electric pump, which can fail electronically. Diagnosis and replacement procedures differ by model.
Is your quote fair?
Compare your written quote with the national range above. A quote well above $1,135 is not automatically wrong, because some vehicles need more parts or more hours, but it is worth asking the shop to explain the difference. Ask for the quote to be split into parts and labor, and for the parts to be listed by name and brand. If the labor portion is far above $536, ask how many hours the shop is charging and what makes your car take longer. Getting a second written quote for the same parts is the simplest way to check a price.
What happens if you wait
A water pump that leaks or has a worn bearing will eventually stop circulating coolant, and the engine overheats. Continuing to drive an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket. If the pump is driven by the timing belt, a failed pump bearing can also damage the belt, which on interference engines can cause major engine damage. Signs to watch include coolant drips near the front of the engine, a whining or grinding noise, and a temperature gauge that rises.
After the repair
Check coolant levels for the next few days and watch the temperature gauge. Keep the receipt; many pumps have a warranty against leaks.
Timing belt engines
If your water pump is driven by the timing belt, it is usually replaced together with the belt and tensioner, since the labor to reach it is the same. If the belt is not due, ask the shop whether replacing it now makes sense, since you would pay that labor again when the belt comes due. On engines with external, belt-driven pumps, the job is simpler and the belt only needs replacing if worn.
