What the valve cover gasket does

The valve cover sits on top of the engine and protects the camshafts and valve train. The gasket underneath seals it so oil stays inside. On many engines the gasket also includes seals for the spark plug tubes. Over years of heating and cooling, the rubber hardens and shrinks, and oil starts to seep out.

Signs of a leaking valve cover gasket

  • Oil on the top or sides of the engine, especially around the edge of the valve cover.
  • A burning oil smell after driving, caused by oil dripping onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Oil in the spark plug wells, which can lead to misfires.
  • Small amounts of smoke from the engine bay after a drive.

Why the cost varies

On a simple inline engine with an easy-to-reach cover, the job is quick. On V-shaped engines there are two covers, and one may sit under the intake manifold or other components, which adds labor. Labor is the biggest part of this repair; the gasket itself is inexpensive.

Don't ignore it for too long

A small seep is not an emergency, but it should not be ignored. Oil on a hot exhaust manifold is a fire risk, oil can damage rubber hoses and wiring, and oil in the spark plug wells can damage ignition coils. A leak also makes it harder to spot other problems, because the engine is covered in grime.

Combine jobs to save labor

Because the valve cover has to come off anyway, this is a good time to replace spark plugs and inspect or replace ignition coils, especially on engines where the plugs sit under the cover. Ask the shop to quote these together.

Can you do it yourself?

On many four-cylinder engines this is a reasonable job for an experienced home mechanic with a torque wrench. The cover bolts must be tightened evenly to the correct specification, and the sealing surfaces must be clean. On engines where the cover is buried under other parts, a shop is the better choice.

Questions to ask the shop

  1. Is the oil coming from the valve cover, or from another seal that looks similar?
  2. Does the quote include the spark plug tube seals?
  3. Should the spark plugs or coils be done at the same time?

How the job is done

  1. The mechanic removes engine covers, ignition coils or plug wires, and any hoses, brackets or wiring attached to the valve cover.
  2. The valve cover bolts are loosened and the cover is lifted off.
  3. The old gasket and any sealant are cleaned from the cover and the cylinder head.
  4. A new gasket and spark plug tube seals are installed, and sealant is applied at specific corners if the manufacturer requires it.
  5. The cover goes back on, and the bolts are tightened in sequence to the correct torque.
  6. The coils, hoses and covers are reinstalled, and the engine is run and checked for leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a leaking valve cover gasket serious? It is not usually urgent, but oil dripping onto a hot exhaust can smoke and is a fire risk. Oil in the spark plug wells can cause misfires.

Why does oil keep leaking after a new gasket? Overtightened bolts, a warped cover, missed sealant spots or a leak from a different seal nearby are common reasons. Ask the shop to recheck.

Is the valve cover gasket the same as the head gasket? No. The valve cover gasket only seals oil at the top of the engine and is much cheaper to replace. The head gasket seals combustion and coolant between the head and block.

Should the PCV valve be checked at the same time? Yes. A clogged PCV system can raise pressure in the crankcase and push oil past gaskets.

Is your quote fair?

Compare your written quote with the national range above. A quote well above $514 is not automatically wrong, because some vehicles need more parts or more hours, but it is worth asking the shop to explain the difference. Ask for the quote to be split into parts and labor, and for the parts to be listed by name and brand. If the labor portion is far above $423, ask how many hours the shop is charging and what makes your car take longer. Getting a second written quote for the same parts is the simplest way to check a price.

What happens if you wait

A valve cover gasket leak usually starts as an oily film around the edge of the cover and slowly gets worse. Oil can drip onto the exhaust manifold, causing a burning smell and smoke from under the hood, which is a fire risk. Oil can also collect in the spark plug wells, damaging ignition coils and causing misfires. Over time, oil on rubber hoses and engine mounts softens them. Replacing the gasket early prevents these follow-on repairs.

After the repair

Look under the hood after a few drives for fresh oil around the cover edge. A small amount of oil residue left from the old leak may burn off at first, but a fresh wet line means the shop should recheck the job.

Doing it with other jobs

On some engines, the spark plugs or ignition coils are reached by removing the valve cover. If those are due, combining the jobs saves labor.

Cost of waiting

Oil-soaked coils and hoses cost more than the gasket itself.
