What a CV axle does

A CV (constant velocity) axle carries power from the transmission to the wheel on front-wheel-drive cars, and on many all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive cars with independent suspension. CV joints at each end let the axle keep turning smoothly while the wheel steers and the suspension moves. Each joint is packed with grease and protected by a rubber boot.

Signs of a failing CV axle

  • A clicking or popping noise when turning, especially at low speed in tight turns. This usually points to the outer joint.
  • A clunk when accelerating or shifting between drive and reverse.
  • Vibration during acceleration, which can point to the inner joint.
  • Grease sprayed on the inside of the wheel or suspension parts from a torn boot.

Why replacement is more common than repair

Most CV problems start with a torn boot. Once the boot tears, grease escapes and dirt and water get in. If caught early, a boot can sometimes be replaced. By the time the joint clicks, replacing the complete axle is usually quicker and cheaper than rebuilding the joint.

What affects the price

RepairPal's average for this repair is high on the parts side. Labor is relatively small because on many cars the axle comes out once the wheel, axle nut and lower suspension joint are released. Prices vary by vehicle and by whether the axle is new original-equipment, new aftermarket or remanufactured.

Is it safe to drive?

A clicking CV joint can last a while, but it will get worse. If the joint fails completely, the car can lose drive to that wheel. Have it checked and replaced before it fails.

Can you do it yourself?

Replacing an axle is an intermediate DIY job. You need to remove the axle nut, separate the suspension and pull the axle from the transmission without damaging the seal. The axle nut must be torqued to specification.

Questions to ask the shop

  1. Is the problem the boot, the joint or the whole axle?
  2. Is the replacement new or remanufactured?
  3. Did you check the transmission seal and the other axle?

How the job is done

  1. The car is raised, the wheel is removed, and the axle nut is loosened.
  2. The lower ball joint or suspension link is separated so the knuckle can swing out.
  3. The outer end of the axle is pushed out of the hub.
  4. The inner end is pried or pulled from the transmission, and transmission fluid that leaks out is caught.
  5. The new axle is installed, the inner end is locked into the transmission, and the suspension is reconnected.
  6. The axle nut is torqued to specification, the transmission fluid level is checked, and the car is road tested.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just the CV boot? If the boot is torn but the joint is quiet and clean inside, a new boot and grease can be an option. Once the joint clicks, replacing the axle is usually better.

Is a clicking CV joint dangerous? It usually gets worse gradually, but a fully failed joint can leave the car unable to move.

Should both axles be replaced? Only if both are worn. Inspect the other side's boots for tears.

Do aftermarket axles cause vibrations? Some low-quality axles can. Quality original-equipment or reputable aftermarket axles reduce the risk.

Is your quote fair?

Compare your written quote with the national range above. A quote well above $1,381 is not automatically wrong, because some vehicles need more parts or more hours, but it is worth asking the shop to explain the difference. Ask for the quote to be split into parts and labor, and for the parts to be listed by name and brand. If the labor portion is far above $306, ask how many hours the shop is charging and what makes your car take longer. Getting a second written quote for the same parts is the simplest way to check a price.

What happens if you wait

The most common first sign of CV joint trouble is a torn rubber boot. Once the boot tears, grease escapes and dirt and water get in, and the joint begins to wear. You may then hear clicking when turning, especially in tight turns at low speed. A worn inner joint can cause vibration during acceleration.

Driving on a clicking CV joint for a while is common, but it eventually wears through. A completely failed axle can leave the car unable to move, and if it breaks at speed, you lose drive power on that wheel. Replacing the axle when clicking starts is usually cheaper than waiting for a tow.

Boot repair vs. new axle

If a torn boot is caught early, before the joint is damaged, replacing only the boot and repacking the joint with fresh grease can be an option. Many shops prefer replacing the whole axle, because labor is similar and a new or remanufactured axle includes new joints and boots. Ask the shop whether your joint is already noisy or worn; if so, a boot alone will not fix it.

After the repair

The shop should torque the axle nut to specification and check the wheel bearing and suspension parts while the axle is out. Listen for clicking in tight turns after the repair, which should be gone. Have the boots checked during oil changes, since catching a small tear early saves money.

Axle quality

Low-cost aftermarket axles vary in quality; ask for a reputable brand with a warranty.
